Married name: Alison Farrer
Alison worked in local government for 32 years, latterly as a Research Assistant. On leaving Local Government, she studied and successfully obtained a PostGraduate Diploma in Genealogy at the University of Strathclyde. She now runs her own business.
Her hobbies include walking, cycling, swimming and playing badminton, tennis and bridge. She is married with two children.
Macdonald, Fiona

Left school in 1972.

Married name Fiona Mitchell.
Fiona completed her studies at the RSAMD in 1975. Her career has been varied with a mixture of performing and teaching. She has travelled with her singing all over the UK and to Greece and USA. She has resigned from her post as the Music Organiser for Midlothian Education and has gone back to teaching in schools. She also teaches at the Mansefield School of Music in Musselburgh. She still finds time to perform but sadly not as much as she would like.
She is married to Alasdair, also a musician. They have 3 children whose professions are in music.
She has little time left for hobbies but enjoys walking with her husband and lovely music-making with family and friends

Marion obtained a Registerd General Nurse degree at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
After completing her training and obtaining an ICU certificate, she worked and travelled in New Zealand. She crossed the Tasman to Australia where she has worked extensively in rural and remote Australia. She has enjoyed working as a Remote Area Nurse Practitioner in areas where the nearest hospital was at least 5 hrs by road or 4 hrs by RFDS flight. She is now working in Perth WA as Clinical Nurse Specialist with Child Development Services. She enjoys swimming in the hot summer of Perth and outdoor cinemas. She has 3 children and 4 grandchildren.

John obtained an MB and ChB (Medicine) at Glasgow University in 1977 and emigrated to Australia in 1979. After a career in general practice he is now enjoying retirement in sunny Brisbane. His main passions are cycling and his kitchen....cooking and home baking. His cakes are to die for!!. He does some voluntary work with the Queensland AIDS council as a support visitor to elderly gay men. He is also involved in several LGBT social groups and the campaign for marriage equality in Australia.

Margaret married a native of Greenock in 1977 then emigrated to South Africa. She has been happily divorced since 2000. She has three children and two grandchildren. She lives in Sandton, near Johannesburg. She works for the Sony Japan Corporation. She loves living in South Africa but still misses Scotland. She recognises names on this site but the memory is not what it used to be. She would love to hear from old school friends. She can be found on Facebook.

Florence used to live in Park Road, Ardrossan. She moved to London to be a nanny when she left Ardrossan Academy. After spending a few years looking after other people's children, she got married and had two of her own. She is just about to become a grandparent and is looking forward to it. Since 1983 she has worked in Local Government.

Peter worked in the labs of ICI, studying chemistry by day-release at Kilmarnock College. He went to Glasgow University from 1975-79, gaining a BSc(Hons) in agricultural chemistry, followed by an MSc in soil chemistry from Reading University. After a year as a research chemist with the Brewing Research Foundation in Surrey he returned to Scotland to do teacher training at Jordanhill. In 1985 he returned to further education as a chemistry lecturer at Kilmarnock College where he became head of section. After six years at Cumbernauld College where he become Assistant Principal, he moved to Jewel & Esk College, in Edinburgh where he is currently Acting Principal and Chief Executive. He has one daughter, Rhona, from his first marriage and now stays in Edinburgh with his wife Jackie and step daughter and step son Claire and David.

Kenneth obtained an HNC IT Management at Anglia Ruskin, Cambridge.
He left school to join the RAF and did not leave until 2003. He met his wife Claire while stationed in Suffolk. They were married in 1981 and now have three grown up children. He now lives in Brampton, Cambridgeshire. He is a Senior Technical Author, mainly writing technical manuals for aircraft and the aircrew. In the past he has lived and worked in Germany, and until recently, Switzerland. His hobbies are motorcycles and American football.

Thomas and his family moved from Canada to Scotland in 1971 when Thomas enroled at Ardrossan Academy. Thomas and his brothers were immediately dubbed 'The Lads from Canada'. He won the First Year high jump event. He played goalkeeper on the school football team. He left in February 1973 to go back to Canada where he obtained an H.V.A.C. (Heating,Ventilation and Air Conditioning) at Humber College, Rexdale, Ontario. He would be interested to see if anyone remembers one of the 'The Lads from Canada' ?

Derek spent 15 years in the RAF then moved to Australia in 1994. He divorced the English wife. He now works for himself as a vibration analyst in the coal mines of Mackay, Queensland. His interests include playing the bagpipes in the Mackay pipe band, sea kayaking around the beautiful Whitsundays and attempting to educate the locals in the finer qualities of the Saltcoats slang.

Jim served an apprenticeship with ICI as an Instrument Artificer at the Nylon Plant in Stevenston. In 1980 he joined Shell U.K. Exploration and Production in Aberdeen where he is currently employed as an Operations Supervisor offshore in the Brent Field. He is married to Irene (Wilkie) and they have three children: Elaine, Fiona and Stephen. He still lives in Ardrossan, though he did live in Aberdeen for a short period. He is a keen driver and is a qualified Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructor running his own driving school. He is also a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders Association. He has been a Special Constable with Strathclyde Police since 1989. This allows him the opportunity to use his spare time to have a positive input to the local community. Jim would be pleased to hear from anyone who was at Ardrossan Academy around the same time as him.

Craig was accepted for Dundee Art school but did not attend as he was offered a job in a rock band in Ireland. He played and recorded there, getting to number 6 in the Irish charts with a self penned record. He played and recorded music in England, USA and Ireland. In 1988 he wrote the signature song for Children in Need, recorded it with Sir Paul McCartney and performed it on BBC TV. He continues to write, produce and record music. He also works in the Chuch of Scientology headquarters in East Grinstead, Sussex. He has three children.

Graham joined the Royal Navy at 17 and spent 23 years in nuclear submarines as a marine engineer. He is now a frontline ambulance crew member in Plymouth. Now in his second marriage, he has one beautiful wife Christine, two sons, two step kids who are a credit to their mum, and 3 dogs which are treated and fed better than him! His life is generally good, apart from the long unsociable hours - who would want to work for the NHS ?

Len obtained a BSc Hons in Pharmacy at Herriot Watt University. He is married with four children and lives in Montrose in the North East of Scotland where he is the proprietor of two pharmacies. He enjoys swimming and is a teacher for the local club, though his main pastime is golf.

June obtained an MA (Hons) in Philosophy and English at the University of Glasgow. She started at Glasgow University doing Medicine then switched to Philosophy, where you "get points for arguing about things long after everyone has ceased to be interested, a skill honed in Charlie Blakely's debating society". June then trained as a nurse and worked for the Royal College of Nursing as a trade union leader for some years. She is now back in the NHS. She has been married once, has one daughter and is now divorced. She can still recite Greek poetry and still dreams about Ardrossan Academy at times of stress.

Morag obtained an MA (Hons) French at the University of Edinburgh.
She is a teacher of French and German. Morag says "If only Keyhole Kate or Geordie Buchan could see me now!"
After her divorce, she travelled a lot, teaching English as a foreign language. She has been back in the UK since around 2006 and is now teaching in Edinburgh.
She has one "gorgeous" son and two "beautiful" grandchildren.

James studied at Kilmarnock College and Glasgow College of Technology. He spent three years at Roche Products in Dalry and twenty two years in the army. He is now working for the MS Society. He lives in York with wife Sue and the two girls, Angela and Fiona.

Morag is married with three sons and lives in West Kilbride. After leaving school she worked on the Daily Record until the birth of her eldest son in 1979. She stayed at home with the children while they were growing up, returning to education as a mature student in 1994. She worked simultaneously on two degrees: a BSc in Media Technology from Paisley University and a BA in Sociology and Education from the Open University. She graduated in 1997. Since then she has worked full time as a lecturer in Computer Science at James Watt College, Greenock, but is now transferring to the new campus in Kilwinning.

Ian obtained a BSc in Environmental Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. He lives with his wife and three children in Milton Keynes and works in London as a Risk Management Consultant. Ian enjoys dinghy sailing and is also involved in teaching the youth members of Milton Keynes Sailing Club.

Kenny has lived in Worthing, West Sussex, since graduating with BSc (hons) in Applied Microbiology from the University of Strathclyde in 1982. He works for SmithKline Beecham where he has been fifteen years in pharmaceutical development, and is now a Medical Rep! He is married to Julia, and has two daughters. He is very active in his local church, plays guitar and sings. He remembers his musical days at the Academy with great fondness - especially the many trips to the Ayrshire Music Festival.

When Ronnie left school he joined Nobels Explosives as an apprentice fitter and today he is still employed within the ICI group. In 1985 he obtained his BSc in Mechanical Engineering at the old Glasgow Tech and in 1995 moved to the US, where he is now Procurement Director for National Starch in New Jersey. He is married to Joyce. They have four children - two born in the US. He still follows Scottish football, enjoys mountain biking and is an avid listener of jazz. Ronnie says "Howdy" to all who know him.

On leaving school, Donald worked with A.T Mays then, In 1988, joined the national tourist office of Hong Kong as Director Northern Europe. He now works for the Government of the Cayman Islands directing the islands' tourism marketing and public/travel industry relations for Europe. In 1989, Donald married Bernadette Laventure, a company director in information publishing. They have two boys,Thomas and Jamie, and they live in Watford. Donald enjoys golf, hill walking and Scotch whisky appreciation. He would like to hear from anyone he knew at Ardrossan Academy.

Sylvia studied nursing, married David and has three children, Thomas, David and Julianne plus Charlie the dog. She is currently (2004) playing catch up with the "What degree did you get" question, while managing a Crisis Resource Team, within an organisation called INCLUDEM who work with children and young people on the margins of society.

After briefly working in the civil service, Frank had the opportunity to move to Canada in 1974. He went back to school as he wasted his time at Ardrossan. His life has been full of successes. He played soccer (football) for many years and is an ardent golfer. He has three fantastic, well educated daughters and five grandsons. He would like to hear from classmates again. His biggest regret is not keeping in touch and also forgetting a lot of their names. "Where's Struan Robinson and Margaret Walker?".

After leaving school Malcolm worked for J.H. Robertson [Hamcurers] in Saltcoats. He then moved on to Harris of Saltcoats [TV], Co-operative and Scottish Farmers [milk retailers] and finished off by working for a roofing company. He then started driving Taxis in 1974 and has been self employed in this business ever since. He also runs a Wedding Video Service. At school, he played football, basketball, volleyball and hockey, as well as taking part in choirs and plays. He married Anne Smith in 1979. They had three children, Donna, Laura and Paul. After leaving school Helen trained to be a nurse in Glasgow, then went to Germany where she worked in Anaesthetics and Endoscopy. She now works in a practice for cardiology and endoscopy. She has 3 children, is divorced and lives in Munich. She loves the mountains and the Oktober Fest but misses the sea. At school, she and her twin sister, Sheila, were involved in the "music scene". Mr. Hetherington was their music teacher. She 'hung around' with Christine Cairns, Susan Young and Yvonne Barclay. Helen asks anyone, who remembers her, to send her an email. On leaving school, Jim joined the Royal Navy. He left the navy after 32 years when he realised he was not going to make a career of it. He married Sharon in 1978 and they have two grown up children. Memories of Ardrossan Academy include teachers: Alex Seggie (woodwork) 'threw a mean chisel'; Chick Blakley 'I never took latin but liked his style' and Andy Partridge 'never figured out what he did'. Innes did a Clerical / Commercial course at Kilmarnock Technical College. Since leaving school, he has had various jobs. He got married in 1975 and has one daughter and one grandson.
He moved to London in 1987 after his marriage broke up. He now lives in Bedford, with new partner, working as a receptionist.
He enjoys walking, reading and spending time with his family.

John left Ardrossan Academy when the family moved to Blackpool. From there he joined the British army at 16, moving up to warrant officer rank, seeing service in Iraq, Bosnia, Kosovo and Northern Ireland. He now works as a training consultant in security, at home and abroad, and lives in Basingstoke, Hampshire. He has so little memories of the Academy but remembers it as a good school which gave him a good foundation for later life.

Sandy attended Ardrossan Academy from 1969 until 1973 when he moved with his family to Canada while in his 5th year.  He finished and graduated from high school in Canada in the small town of Norwood,  Ontario, and then took Business Administration at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Peterborough, Ontario. Sandy has worked for the Canadian Government for 29 years in a variety of positions and in various locations across the country. He is currently the manager of employment operations in the east end of the City of Toronto for the Canadian Department of Human Resources and Skills Development. He lives with his wife, Lori, just outside of Toronto and their 3 girls, Emily, Katie and Kirsten.  Sandy attended Kyleshill Primary from 1962 to 1969 and has fond memories of growing up on Dalry Road and then later in Christie Gardens.

Married name Janis Reid
Janis attended Ardrossan Academy from 1960 to 1972. She remembers, with affection, the teachers: Miss Miller with her rubber hammer & cardboard birthday cake, Miss Taylor and Miss Banks. From 1st year there was Miss Lyle to keep all the wayward girls in line.
Janis left school to work with the Royal Bank of Scotland. Today she is still working in banking but with the Bank of Western Australia in Perth, Australia. Her husband Michael and children , Lianne and Michael, arrived on these sunny shores in 1989. Her hobbies include horseriding, travel, keepfit and reading.
Meek, Garry

Left school in 1974.

Garry came to Ardrossan Academy from West Kilbride Primary school in 1968. In 1974 he moved on to Paisley University and graduated in 1978 with a B.Sc in Chemistry. He subsequently joined BP as a Petroleum Engineer and has lived and worked in a number of locations including Aberdeen, Wytch Farm in Dorset, Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, Head office in London, Kuwait City - Kuwait, Anchorage - Alaska and Houston Texas. Garry is married to Nicola (just once so far!) with two daughters and has lived in the USA for over 20 years now. The only things I miss about the UK are the historical sites, beautiful gardens English country pubs and a decent curry house or fish and chip shop! He wanted to announce his undying admiration for Fiona MacLean who also left AA in 1974. He thought she was just gorgeous but never had the guts to tell her !!

Laura was in S2 when she emigrated to Canada with her family in 1977. She attended Seneca College, Toronto. They settled in southwest Ontario for several years before she moved across Canada ending up in the Province of Alberta. She has two grown children and has put together a Scottish family tree dating as far back as 1600s. She hopes to connect with former classmates as she is planning a wee trip home sometime in 2016.

William obtained a City and Guilds in 'Bricklaying' at Ayr College. He has worked in construction since he left school. He lived in Irvine for 13 years but is now back in his old town of 'sunny' Ardrossan. He is widowed and single now. He has 3 children: Shelley, Ryan and Connor. He would like to say 'Hello' to his old school pals and hopes they are all well.

Alex has lived in England since 1977 where he attended Normanhurst Grammar School, London. He then obtained a BSc in Nursing (Mental Health) at Thames Valley University. He currently works at St Bernard's Hospital, Ealing in forensic mental health. Alex has recognised a few former pupils on this website and has met up with Robert Bauld and Stephen Marshall. He has been married and has 2 children: Alex (born 1988) and Louise (born 1991). His pastimes include fishing, football (Celtic and ManU) and most other sports. On leaving school, she worked in a local supermarket for quite a number of years. She married William in 1985, lost her baby daughter in 1988 but went on to have two lovely sons: Scott (born 1988) and Frazer (born 1993). Both attended Ardrossan Academy.
Marion says "Hi" to everyone who remembers her and asks that you contact her if you would like a chat about the years gone by. She says "I may be older but I'm still that quiet person that I was at school".

She married Murray McWhirter (from Saltcoats) in 1979 and emigrated to Australia in 1981. They have 2 girls. They lived in Traralgon, in country Victoria until January 1998, then moved to Brisbane. They now live near Noosa in Queensland.

After attending Kilmarnock, Ayr and Paisley colleges, Ruth emigrated to Australia where she lives with her husband on a hobby farm in S.E. Victoria. She runs an electrical contracting business with her husband. She works as a book keeper for a shopfitting company in Victoria, Australia.
She will be visiting Scotland in August 2009 and would like to have contact with Lorraine Scott, Brian Anderson and any one else she was friendly with.

He joined Strathclyde Police in 1981 and is presently working as the Section Inspector at Saltcoats. He married Elizabeth Donnelly in 1983. They have two girls, Lauren and Cara. He has never moved out of the area for any period of time and still resides in Saltcoats.

Brian left Ardrossan Academy to stay with his mother in Tillicoultry. He finished school at Alva Academy. Those were very difficult times for him. Today is much better. His pastimes are football, boxing (wathing), 'close-up' card magic and high level gambling. He does not play for money. He just detects how people get cheated. His biggest love, though, is music. He plays drums, bass guitar, lead guitar and is currently learning saxaphone. Jim joined The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald straight from school and spent a year in Edinburgh studying journalism at Napier College - allegedly! After college he returned and progressed from junior reporter to become sports editor before leaving in 1988 to help set up a daily sports paper in Glasgow. 'The Daily Winner' lasted just a few months and after a brief return to Ardrossan as Deputy Editor he joined The Scottish Sun in Glasgow. He is now Production Editor at the Kinning Park plant. He married Susan (Lambert) in 1982 and has three children - Alan, Alistair and Rachel. He made a brief venture into junior football (Troon, Kilwinning Rangers) after school but now lists watching Killie, golf, his guitar, fishing and rebuilding his old motor boat as his hobbies. He'd love to hear from former class mates.

On leaving school, Gordon joined Nobel's Explosives Company as a Commercial Trainee. He married in 1980. In 1990 he moved to Manchester and obtained a BA (Hons) in Theology and Pastoral Studies at the Nazarene Theological College, Manchester. From 1995 to 2005 he was a Minister in the Church of the Nazarene in St Helens and Ashton-under-Lyne. He is now living in Ashton-under-Lyne, waiting for his divorce to be finalised and working in the warehouse at PC World in Stretford. He has a daughter, Debbie, and a son, Mark, who is currently studying for his Masters at Manchester University.

Fiona left Ardrossan at 14 to attend Shawlands Academy in Glasgow. She trained as a nurse in Aberdeen then married Alex and moved to Perthshire. They have two children, Heather and David. In her spare time she helps to organise a local Folk Festival and a Highland Games. Marelyn joined the WRNS when she left school and left after one year. She came home and found work at the RSAMD in the Admin Offices. She married Alistair in April 1978. They have three children Gordon, Euan and Jennifer. She continued working in Glasgow and left in June 1978. She then worked in the Clydesdale Bank in Ardrossan and then left to start a family in April 1982. She went back to work in 1996 at St. John's Primary School in Stevenston as a Special Needs Classroom Assistant to look after a boy who suffered from Muscular Dystrophy. She continued to work at St. John's until June 2006. Her pastimes are singing, reading, badminton, tennis and walking in the country.

Colin obtained an MA (2.1) in French and German Language and Literature at the University of Glasgow in 1983. He then moved to London to train as a chartered accountant. That lasted for three months. He then trained to be a teacher at Cambridge University. He teaches French and German, first at Sevenoaks School, and now at Reed's School in Surrey, where he has been for 10 years. Alan obtained an MA Hons. History and a Dip. Business Admin at the University of Edinburgh and an Mst. Criminology at the University of Cambridge. He is happily divorced with 3 children. He is currently working in the SW for the Home Office though he lives in NW England. Though he has lived in numerous parts of England and travelled a fair bit, he still finds 'blissful peace' walking along the North Shore in Ardrossan and having occasional breaks on Arran.

Willie obtained a B.Sc (Hons) in Mining Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. He joined the National Coal as Mining Engineer and worked happily in Scotland for almost 4 years. A dying industry, and the desire for a fresh challenge, led him to the North Sea as a Drilling Engineer with BP. In 1981 he emigrated to Canada to work in the Arctic offshore where, with the odd time-out, he has worked ever since. Willie now lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with his wife, Diana, and two kids, Neil & Victoria. He and his wife return to Arran every year and thereafter to Morven for the month of April. He has many happy memories of school - getting time off to deliver the milk and hang out with the Janitor. Amongst the teachers, Archie Bannatyne and Dumpy Dempster are the ones who stand out the most. He remains hopeful that he will never really grow up. Please feel free to get in touch with him.

After leaving Ardrossan Academy Shirley went to Heriot Watt University to study Pharmacy. She left after one year and trained as a nurse and then as a midwife, qualifying in 1980. She worked in Abu Dhabi for 2 years then returned to Scotland. In 1999 she graduated from Queen Margaret University College with a BSc in Midwifery. She has now settled in Bathgate, working as a midwife counsellor for the NHS. She enjoys travelling, especially caravanning in France with partner Margaret and Hamish the Labradoodle. She also enjoys golf, fly fishing, gardening, socialising and avoiding hard work of any kind. Her favourite school memories are "Balf" Brown's English class, Mr Cowie's History quizzes, "Budge" Mackie with his ticker tape and stroboscope and the school magazine committee.

George obtained a degree in Marine engineering at the University of Glasgow. He has been at sea since leaving school and has been located in all parts of the globe. Since 1988 he has been Chief Engineer aboard VLCC's for Aramco. He has been based at Dubai, Nagasaki, Freeport Bahamas, Lisbon and Odense. George married Jean Dorrian in 1980 and they have four children: Danielle, Gregory, Erica and Ryan. George still tries to keep fit by running six miles a day with stints in the local gym, but it is not getting any easier and he is not getting any younger! He still keeps in touch with many local class friends and it would be good to hear from others further afield.

Phyllis became a salvation army officer (minister of religion) but came out to get married in 1994.
She now works as a classroom assistant in Geilsland School in Beith. This is a Church of Scotland school for boys with behavioural problems.
She is still in the salvation army and likes reading and computing. She loved school and remembers teachers like Miss Harris, Mr Heatherington, Miss Law, Mr McGarva and Mrs Shanks. Her son will be going to Ardrossan Academy in 2011.

Christine worked for the German Representative of Industry and Trade in Washington, DC USA until his retirement. After that she was Director of Finance and Human Resources at the Washington DC based Daimler Benz office. She left there in 1999 to work at her son's school, Churchill Road Elementary School in McLean, Virginia, USA. Christine is married and enjoys raising her son and all of their pets ... cats dogs etc. She enjoys reading, travel, swimming, Tai-Chi and the martial arts. She would really like to get back in touch with her geography teacher, Mr Penman, and past students of her school.

Christine has fond memories of Miss Lyle's assemblies and not so fond ones of Miss McKelvies 'introduction to womanhood' sessions. Christine married Gordon after romance blossomed in the Marina Cafe. They have four grown-up children and have lived in Cheshire since 1988 when RBS sent Gordon south of the border to show the English how to look after their money. He is retired and had nothing to do with todays crisis, honest! Christine is Executive Chef for a large healthcare company and travels the country advising her extensive team of chefs. She reckons Fanny Robertson's introduction to the making of muesli has a lot to answer for!

After university and teacher training, Alastair went to Campbeltown Grammar to teach English, and thereafter taught for 10 years in Kilmarnock schools. He returned to Ardrossan Academy in 1989, briefly as Head of English, then as Assistant Head, and, thanks to the McCrone settlement, recently, is one of the Deputes. He married Jean [Wright] in 1975. Jean is Head of Glencairn Primary in Stevenston - previously Stevenston Higher Grade. They have two children, one a teacher and one doing Highers. Alastair's hobbies are reading; listening to all sorts of music; gardening; bouts of trying to write, and, in season, visiting French vinyards.

She went to Edinburgh for about five years in 1981, moved to California in 1986 for ten years, then back to Edinburgh. She stayed there for a while then, in 2004/2005, moved to Greece for a year in Athens and Crete. She moved back to Edinburgh for a while as both parents had gone and is now teaching in Hong Kong.
Does anyone remember Mr Mooney, the German teacher? Sometimes she finds herself calling the kids in the class 'people' just like he did! So far, so good! Would be nice to hear from anyone who left around the same time.

Susan obtained a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at the University of Dundee.
She worked in Dundee and Forfar after qualifying. She now lives in Ulverston in Cumbria where she owns a very busy dental practice. She has a son, Andrew. Her interests are hillwalking, aerobics and skiing. She also enjoys travelling.

After he left school, Robert worked in the Metallic Manufacturing Company from 78 - 82. He left there and went to Initial Textile Services, where he is today. He is currently the Production Manager.
