Mole Facts

The mole is the number of atomic mass units in 1 gram.

This number is 6.02 x 1023, also known as the Avogadro constant.

Each 1H atom weighs 1 amu so 1 mole of 1H atoms weighs 1 gram.

Each 14N atom weighs 14 amu so 1 mole of 14N atoms weighs 14 grams.

Each NH3 molecule weighs 17 amu so 1 mole of NH3 molecules weigh 17grams.

1 mole (6.02 x 1023) of pollen grains would cover London to a depth of 1 mile.

1 mole (6.02 x 1023) of marshmallows would cover the USA to a depth of 600 miles.

Taking out one water molecule every second, it would take 5.3 x 1015 years to remove all the water molecules in a teaspoon (5 cm3) of water.

If the water molecules in a teaspoon of water were laid out end to end they would stretch for 1.04 x 1010 miles - to the sun and back 56 times.

The average cow burps 30 moles of Methane every day.
