| What We Do |
With the implementation of the Education (Additional Support for Learning (Scotland) Act 2004, additional support needs now take into account a variety of factors that may affect a child's ability to progress and benefit from school. Children who may be bereaved or children who may be living in care and gifted children, who may have a special skill or aptitude, are now also considered to have additional support needs
The Pupil Support department can offer support to any pupil in the school, on a short or long term basis. Subject staff are made aware of the Additional Support Needs of pupils and these needs can be met by focused class work or by support from Pupil Support Teachers or Classroom Assistants. A number of different strategies may be used to support pupils including specially prepared teaching materials, co-operative teaching, small group/individual tuition or counselling. S6 'buddies' also help younger pupils develop their reading skills through a programme of paired reading.
Pupil Support Teachers also act as consultants providing information concerning the Additional Support Needs of individual pupils and advising suitable strategies and resources. They work closely with Guidance staff, External Agencies and pupils and parents to set goals for individual pupils and to produce Individual Educational Programmes when required.
There is a close liaison between the Pupil Support Department and associated Primary Schools to identify pupils likely to have Additional Support Needs which allows for early intervention and consistency of support.
Pupils Support staff make provision for Additional Assessment Arrangements, such as a reader or scribe, and an alternative curriculum is offered through courses including ASDAN & Different Class for identified pupils.
A homework club runs in the department at lunchtime and pupils are encouraged to attend and complete homework tasks with support from staff and sixth year pupils.
