S1 1st. Year pupils are taught a common, but differentiated, course based on the New Maths in Action textbooks with pupils working from the full range of available texts. They are taught in 9 mixed ability groups, determined by their register class. The maximum class size is 20. |
S2 Pupils in S2 are set in classes based on aptitude and ability shown in S1. They are taught a course which is geared to the 5 - 14 Level which they are working towards. In December of S2 pupils are reassessed to ensure they are in appropriate groups prior to engaging in 5-14 assessment in January. They then make an early start on their Standard Grade Course in February of S2. |
|
S2, S3 and S4 Pupils begin their Standard Grade courses in February of S2 and are set in classes, based on ability, to tackle work at Credit/General, General/Foundation or Foundation/General levels. The early start allows relatively complex issues to be considered in greater depth and provides more time for revision prior to the SQA examinations at the end of S4. Pupils following the Foundation/General course are generally taught in relatively small class groups to allow them to receive the intensive support which can be vital to progress. |

S5 and S6 Pupils in 5th. and 6th. Year have the opportunity to prepare for National Qualifications at an appropriate level based on their level of achievement in the previous session. S5 pupils can follow courses at the levels of Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2 or Higher. S6 pupils can engage in all of the above levels plus Advanced Higher. The Advanced Higher course will be offered within the school provided there is sufficient uptake. Otherwise, it will be offered by another school in North Ayrshire. |
