REACH
Last Friday we hosted a Glasgow University Reach session for a group of our 4th Year pupils who were joined by pupils from Auchenharvie and St Matthew's Academies. This morning session was an introduction to university and pupils took part in discussions and activities. The pupils are now looking forward to a visit to Glasgow University during March, which is the next step in the programme.
OPTIONS TWILIGHT
An Options Twilight event was held on Thursday 2nd February for pupils in 2nd, 4th and 5th Years. It gave pupils and parents the opportunity to chat about their options for next year, with our Subject Principal Teachers, Faculty Heads, representatives from colleges and universities, STEM ambassadors, training providers and staff from Skills Development Scotland. The event was very well attended and we have had some very positive feedback about the evening, which was a new venture for the school.
HOLIDAY
School closes at 3.25pm on Thursday 9th February and resumes for pupils on Wednesday 15th, Tuesday being an in-service day for staff.
"WEEL DONE CUTTY-SARK!"
On Wednesday, 1st February, Hopscotch Theatre came to Ardrossan Academy to perform 'Tam O'Shanter'. This was shown 'in the round', where the audience surrounds the performers on all four sides. This made the performance much more graphic as the action happened inches from where the pupils were sitting, and also allowed easy interaction between pupils and actors.

Two actors, Ross and Fiona, brought the sights and sounds of "Alloway's auld haunted Kirk" to life with little more than some yards of material, bubble wrap and a few musical instruments. The pupils joined in the witches' and warlocks' dance and helped create the spooky atmosphere. Screams and shrieks echoed around the assembly hall as the witches chased Tam and Meg across a makeshift bridge. Long after the actors of Hopscotch Theatre had left, the memory of Tam and Meg's adventure still ran in many pupils' minds.
LORD SPEAKER'S PEERS IN SCHOOLS OUTREACH PROGRAMME
We hosted a talk from a member of the House of Lords on Friday to encourage students to engage more with the political and parliamentary process. Lord McAvoy met with 5th and 6th Year Modern Studies students for an hour to talk about the work and role of the House of Lords. This was followed by a question and answer session on various aspects of the parliamentary process and life at Westminster generally.
Mrs Browne, PT Social Subjects said, "Our pupils were delighted to have the opportunity to grill a member of the House of Lords about the effectiveness and membership of the House of Lords."
The visit was arranged through the Lord Speaker's "Peers in Schools" programme, which has been running across the UK since 2007 and has so far involved around 30,000 young people. This continuing outreach programme sends members of the House of Lords into schools and colleges across the country to give talks in support of the citizenship curriculum.
We would like to thank Lord McAvoy for taking the time to visit Ardrossan Academy and speaking to our students.
